Northern Hawk-Owl (Surnia ulula)

Comments:  This beautiful owl of the northern boreal forests is quite an evolutionary curiosity: a long-tailed hawklike owl that hunts primarily by day. It is most often seen perched high atop a tree, as shown in the bottom photo, from which it hunts birds and small mammals. It will take prey as large as snowshoe hares and ptarmigans. I photographed this amazing bird north of the Ottawa River in Quebec, Canada.
