Eastern Pine Elfin (Callophrys niphon)

"Stunningly banded with rich reddish brown and black, the Eastern Pine Elfin can be mistaken for no other butterfly in our area... Most common in pine barrens, this elfin can also be found in deciduous woodlands with groves of White Pine" (Butterflies through Binoculars). Note the interesting variations between the two above photos, which were both taken at Elk Neck State Park, Cecil County, Maryland (5/7/2005).
